10 Awesome Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

1.    Don’t skip meals. If you think that skipping 1 or 2 meals will allow you to indulge at the holiday party, think again. Skipping meals will only make you more hungry and risk pigging out. And don’t forget, once your body is in hunger mode, your body is going to start storing fat. So, it’s better to eat a small veggie snack or fruit before you go to your holiday party. This will help you curb your appetite and be less tempted to over-indulge.

2.    Buzz the buffet. Take a walk down the buffet table first to take inventory of the food. Then choose your favorites and skip over your least favorite. Make sure you select veggies and fruit to fill up on the healthy stuff and keep the rest at smaller portions.

3.    Bring healthy food to the party. Bring your favorite healthy food to a party. Not only will everyone love your generosity, you can indulge in your own healthy selection.

4.    Watch out for the Appetizers. If you grab some appetizers off a party tray, be aware that an 80-calorie portion of cheese cubes is about the size of two AA batteries. Most people eat three to five times that amount without noticing. Veggie dip is never low fat or low calorie. Fill up on the raw veggies, but only take a teaspoon of dip and use it sparingly. The trick is to fill a small plate, take a long while to munch on those few items and don’t go back for seconds.

5.    Mini quiches aren’t so mini. At a whopping 80 to 120 calories each, only have 1 or 2 mini quiches. Even though you see the green veggies in them, the majority of your bite is made of eggs, butter and cheese.

6.    Tex-Mex red flag. Love the guacamole? Great have some! It’s the chips that you may want to skip. Try eating your guacamole with cucumber slices, cherry tomato or celery and carrot sticks instead.

7.    Don’t go nuts. Beware of the bowl of party nuts. These may not be the healthy almonds you snack on at home. Those party nuts have probably been coated with sugary toppings, roasted in oil and sprinkled with gobs of salt.

8.    Stab it–don’t dip it. Chicken skewers are a great choice, but skip the dip. Grilled chicken will help to fill you up and is a great source of lean protein. Dips on the other hand are usually loaded with salt and oil so use sparingly or not at all.

9.    Don’t drink your calories. Alcoholic drinks are loaded with calories. If you must drink, avoid the fattening eggnog and alternate alcohol with water or seltzer. This cuts your alcoholic calories in half!

10. Don’t drop good habits. Just because you are visiting with Aunt Mae, doesn’t mean that you should completely forget your daily health habits. Wear your best fitting jeans to help you gauge overstuffing yourself. Bring your supplements with you and make time to take a walk in Aunt Mae’s neighborhood. Help out with cooking and clean up to help burn calories and get a smile from Aunt Mae. And, at the end of the holidays, forgive yourself for the few yummy bites that you just could not resist.
